Why filters need changing
EPA says all filters need regular replacement, and that a dirty, overloaded filter will not work well. EPA's MERV page says all filters require periodic replacement to function properly.
The manual sets the schedule
EPA says to follow the manufacturer's recommendations on maintenance and replacement. We do not give a schedule in months or hours for any air purifier.
Prefilters
A prefilter is a coarse first layer that catches larger particles before the main filter. The maker's manual says whether it is washable or replaceable.
Signs a filter needs changing
EPA says that if filters appear heavily soiled when you replace them, you should consider changing them more frequently. During wildfire smoke, EPA says to check filters frequently and change them when they appear dirty.
Smoke season
EPA says that during periods of heavy smoke, you should keep extra filters on hand and plan to replace them more often than recommended by the manufacturer.
Cleaning the unit
We do not give cleaning steps. Unplug the unit before you open it, and follow the maker's manual for cleaning and filter changes.
