What the studies show

EPA says multiple studies with portable HEPA air cleaners have found improvements in one or more allergy or asthma symptoms. It says the studies do not always show major improvements, and they do not show improvements in all symptoms.

Larger particles settle

EPA says some controversy exists about whether air cleaners can reduce the allergic reactions produced by larger particles such as pollen, house dust allergens, some molds, and animal dander. EPA says most larger particles, such as pollen, house dust allergens, some molds, and animal dander, are found where they settle on surfaces in the home, rather than in the air. It says they cannot be removed by an air cleaner unless disturbed and re-suspended in the air.

Mold

EPA says portable air cleaners and furnace or HVAC filters do not address the cause of mold and musty odors. It says to get rid of the source of the moisture and clean up the mold.

Dust and dust mites

EPA's asthma page suggests washing bedding in hot water once a week, using dust-proof covers on pillows and mattresses, and using a vacuum with a HEPA filter on carpet and fabric-covered furniture.

Pets

EPA says proteins in a pet's skin flakes, urine, feces, saliva, and hair can trigger asthma in people allergic to animal dander. It suggests keeping pets out of the bedroom of the person with asthma.

Your doctor comes first

EPA says to work with a doctor to identify asthma triggers and develop a treatment plan. We do not say any air purifier treats, prevents, or relieves allergies or asthma. Talk to your doctor before you change how you manage allergies or asthma.

FAQ

EPA says possibly. It says studies with portable HEPA air cleaners have found improvements in one or more symptoms, but not in all symptoms. Ask your doctor.
No. EPA says mold is caused by a water or moisture problem, and air cleaners do not address the cause.

General information only. An air purifier is not a substitute for ventilation, for removing the source of a pollutant, or for medical care. Read and follow the maker's manual. The California Air Resources Board strongly advises against the use of ozone generators in spaces occupied by people or animals. If you have asthma, allergies, or heart or lung disease, talk to your doctor. During wildfire smoke, follow local officials and be ready to evacuate. In an emergency, call 911.
